Perfectly golden Air Fryer Crispy Onions — crunchy, flavorful, and oil-free. A healthy topping for burgers, salads, or casseroles.

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (or cooking spray)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions. Peel and thinly slice the onions into rings or strips. Separate them gently into individual pieces.
  2. Soak in buttermilk. Place the onions in a bowl and pour over the buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 20 minutes to soften and reduce sharpness.
  3. Prepare the coating. In a separate bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  4. Coat the onions. Remove onions from the buttermilk, letting excess drip off. Toss them in the flour mixture until fully coated. Shake off any excess flour.
  5. Preheat the air fryer. Set the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and let it preheat for 3 minutes.
  6. Arrange the onions. Lightly coat the air fryer basket with olive oil or spray. Spread the onions evenly in a single layer. Do not overcrowd — cook in batches if needed.
  7. Air fry. Cook for 10–12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until the onions are golden and crispy.
  8. Cool and serve. Let the onions cool slightly to crisp up further before serving or using as a topping.

Notes

Slice onions evenly for consistent cooking.

For extra crunch, double-dip the onions: soak again in buttermilk and recoat with flour before air frying.

A light mist of oil helps the coating brown evenly.

Use yellow or sweet onions for the best balance of flavor and texture.
