Description
Perfectly golden Air Fryer Crispy Onions — crunchy, flavorful, and oil-free. A healthy topping for burgers, salads, or casseroles.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (or cooking spray)
Instructions
- Prepare the onions. Peel and thinly slice the onions into rings or strips. Separate them gently into individual pieces.
- Soak in buttermilk. Place the onions in a bowl and pour over the buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 20 minutes to soften and reduce sharpness.
- Prepare the coating. In a separate bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
- Coat the onions. Remove onions from the buttermilk, letting excess drip off. Toss them in the flour mixture until fully coated. Shake off any excess flour.
- Preheat the air fryer. Set the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and let it preheat for 3 minutes.
- Arrange the onions. Lightly coat the air fryer basket with olive oil or spray. Spread the onions evenly in a single layer. Do not overcrowd — cook in batches if needed.
- Air fry. Cook for 10–12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until the onions are golden and crispy.
- Cool and serve. Let the onions cool slightly to crisp up further before serving or using as a topping.
Notes
Slice onions evenly for consistent cooking.
For extra crunch, double-dip the onions: soak again in buttermilk and recoat with flour before air frying.
A light mist of oil helps the coating brown evenly.
Use yellow or sweet onions for the best balance of flavor and texture.
