  • Author: Sarah White

Description

Warm, comforting Apple Cinnamon Baked French Toast with soft apples, cinnamon, and custard-soaked bread—easy, cozy breakfast for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • ½ cup half-and-half
  • ½ cup 2% milk
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

1. Prepare the Bread Base

Grease a baking dish and fill it with the cubed French bread. Spread it evenly to create a sturdy base for the custard mixture. Slightly stale bread works best because it soaks up the custard without becoming mushy.

2. Make the Custard

In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, milk, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Ensure the mixture is smooth. Pour it evenly over the bread cubes, gently pressing the bread down to help it soak up the custard.

3. Cook the Apple Mixture

In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced Granny Smith apples, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon. Cook for 5–7 minutes or until the apples become tender and lightly caramelized.

4. Combine and Layer

Spoon the warm apple mixture evenly over the custard-soaked bread. This ensures every bite is infused with cinnamon-apple flavor.

5. Bake

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 35–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.

6. Serve Warm

Allow the baked French toast to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy as is, or top with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or whipped cream.

Notes

Use day-old bread for best results.

Add chopped pecans or raisins for extra texture.

Double the cinnamon if you prefer stronger spice.

To prepare ahead, assemble the night before and bake in the morning.
