A hearty, comforting casserole layered with smoky sausage, tender potatoes, and a creamy sauce topped with melted cheese. Perfect for family dinners or potlucks.
Ingredients
- 1 lb smoked sausage or kielbasa, sliced
- 4 cups potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cups milk or heavy cream
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- Fresh parsley or chives, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt butter, whisk in flour, then slowly add milk or cream. Stir until thickened, then season with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Layer half of the potatoes, sausage, and onions in the dish. Pour half of the sauce over the layers. Repeat with remaining ingredients, finishing with potatoes.
- Sprinkle cheese over the top, cover with foil, and bake for 50–60 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
- Remove foil for the last 10 minutes of baking to brown the cheese. Rest for 10 minutes before serving, then garnish with parsley or chives.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave. This dish also freezes well for up to 2 months. Serve with a fresh green salad or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.
