Heart-Shaped French Toast

  • Author: Sarah White

Description

Sweet and charming Heart-Shaped French Toast made with cinnamon and brown sugar—perfect for Valentine’s or cozy mornings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 slices of slightly stale bread

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 tablespoons milk

  • A few drops of vanilla extract (optional)

  • Dash of salt

  • 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

  • Nutella, chocolate spread, or maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  • Cut the Bread into Hearts:
Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out hearts from each slice of bread. Save the scraps for breadcrumbs or snacking.

  • Make the Custard Mixture:
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, vanilla (if using), cinnamon, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt.

  • Dip the Bread:
Dip each heart-shaped bread slice into the egg mixture, coating both sides evenly. Let excess drip off.

  • Heat the Skillet:
Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat until foamy.

  • Cook the French Toast:
Place dipped bread hearts into the skillet. Cook 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and slightly crispy on the edges.

  • Serve Warm:
Transfer to plates and serve warm with Nutella, chocolate spread, or maple syrup. Add fruit, powdered sugar, or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

Slightly stale bread works better as it soaks up the custard without falling apart.

Use brioche, challah, or sandwich bread depending on your texture preference.

For crispier edges, toast the bread lightly before dipping.

You can prep the custard mixture a day ahead for quicker mornings.
