  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 8 patties 1x

Description

A savory pastry filled with spicy ground beef, encased in a flaky, golden crust, perfect for snacks or meals.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons curry powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • ¼ cup butter or margarine
  • ¼ cup shortening
  • ⅓ cup water

Filling:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 Scotch bonnet pepper – stemmed, seeded, and minced
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons browning seasoning sauce
  • 1 bay leaf
  • ½ cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  • Prepare the Pastry:
    • In a large bowl, combine flour, curry powder, and salt. Cut in butter and shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Add water and mix until the dough comes together. Wrap in plastic and chill for 30 minutes.
  • Prepare the Filling:
    • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Add onion, Scotch bonnet pepper, curry powder, allspice, cloves, thyme, black pepper, and salt. Cook until the onion is soft.
    • Dissolve the bouillon cube in water and add to the beef mixture along with browning sauce and bay leaf. Simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in bread crumbs and cook until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and let cool.
  • Assemble the Patties:
    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut into circles. Place a spoonful of filling on one half of each circle, fold over, and seal the edges with a fork. Brush with beaten egg.
  • Bake:
    • Place patties on a baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

For a spicier filling, leave some seeds in the Scotch bonnet pepper.
