Ingredients
Scale
Pretzel Dough
- ¾ cup milk
- ¼ cup water
- 1 ½ tablespoons granulated sugar
- ¼ ounce active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 2 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1 ¼ teaspoons salt
Hot Dogs
- 8 hot dogs, frozen (helps maintain structure while wrapping)
Pretzel Bath
- 3 cups hot water
- ½ cup baking soda
Topping
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon water
- Coarse sea salt
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast
Warm the milk and water until lukewarm (about 110°F). In a bowl, stir in sugar and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy. - Mix the Dough
Add yeast mixture to a mixer bowl. Add flour, softened butter, and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms. - Knead
Knead dough for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add flour only if needed to prevent sticking. - First Rise
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled. - Prepare the Hot Dogs
Keep hot dogs frozen—they wrap easier and maintain shape. - Shape the Dough
Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a long rope (16–18 inches). - Wrap the Hot Dogs
Spiral each dough rope around a hot dog, gently pinching ends to secure. - Prepare Pretzel Bath
Mix hot water and baking soda in a large bowl. - Dip the Pretzel Dogs
Quickly dip each wrapped hot dog into the baking soda solution for 10–15 seconds. Remove and place on a lined baking sheet. - Brush with Egg Wash
Mix egg and 1 tbsp water. Brush over each pretzel dog. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt. - Bake
Bake at 400°F for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown. - Serve Warm
Allow to cool slightly, then serve with mustard, cheese sauce, or your favorite dip.
Notes
Frozen hot dogs prevent slipping during wrapping.
Longer dough ropes create a tighter spiral and more pretzel flavor per bite.
Don’t skip the baking soda bath—it is essential for true pretzel color and taste.
For softer crusts, brush with melted butter after baking.
