Description
A classic Italian Christmas dessert made of crispy fried dough balls, coated in a warm honey glaze, and topped with festive sprinkles and toasted almonds.

- 2 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1 navel orange, zested
- 1 lemon, zested
- 1/4 c. granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs, room temperature
- 1/4 c. unsalted butter, melted
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 3/4 c. honey
- 2 tsp. fresh orange juice
- 1/2 c. toasted sliced almonds
- 1/4 c. nonpareil sprinkles
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
- Add the orange zest, lemon zest, and granulated sugar to the dry ingredients and stir.
- In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until combined.
- Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, then let it rest for 30 minutes.
- Roll the dough into thin ropes, cut them into small pieces, and roll them into balls.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan and fry the dough balls in batches until golden.
- In a saucepan, warm the honey and orange juice until smooth, then toss the fried dough balls in the honey mixture.
- Arrange the Struffoli into a mound on a plate, sprinkle with toasted almonds and nonpareil sprinkles.
Notes
To prevent Struffoli from becoming soggy, ensure they are well-drained after frying and serve immediately after coating with honey.
