Description

A classic Italian Christmas dessert made of crispy fried dough balls, coated in a warm honey glaze, and topped with festive sprinkles and toasted almonds.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 navel orange, zested
  • 1 lemon, zested
  • 1/4 c. granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1/4 c. unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 3/4 c. honey
  • 2 tsp. fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 c. toasted sliced almonds
  • 1/4 c. nonpareil sprinkles

Instructions

  • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  • Add the orange zest, lemon zest, and granulated sugar to the dry ingredients and stir.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until combined.
  • Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, then let it rest for 30 minutes.
  • Roll the dough into thin ropes, cut them into small pieces, and roll them into balls.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan and fry the dough balls in batches until golden.
  • In a saucepan, warm the honey and orange juice until smooth, then toss the fried dough balls in the honey mixture.
  • Arrange the Struffoli into a mound on a plate, sprinkle with toasted almonds and nonpareil sprinkles.

Notes

To prevent Struffoli from becoming soggy, ensure they are well-drained after frying and serve immediately after coating with honey.
